South Carolina Lottery
Aptly called the South Carolina Education Lottery, this state lottery started on January 7, 2002, after the state’s General Assembly approved it earlier in June 2001. The state lottery joined Powerball in 2002 and started selling tickets for Mega Millions in January 2010. On September 18, 2013, one lucky anonymous ticket holder from South Carolina walked away with the $399.4 million Powerball jackpot.
South Carolina has raised over $3.4 billion for the state’s educational initiatives, including K-12 programs, scholarships for college students, and community education. A little over 26 percent of each dollar raised through lottery ticket sales is plowed back into the state to support good causes.
In October 2018, one lucky South Carolina player won the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot, one of the biggest jackpots ever seen as well as the biggest amount to be won by a single ticket holder.
To play the lottery, South Carolina residents must be 18 years or older.
