North Carolina Lottery
Up until August 2005, North Carolina was the only East Coast state without its own lottery. That all changed when the North Carolina State Lottery Act was signed into law and it was agreed that around 35% of sales generated would be donated to education in the state. As a nod to this agreement, the lottery was called the North Carolina Education Lottery.
The lottery proved successful in its first few years after tickets went on sale in March 2006, with over $1 billion tickets sold by May that year. Between July 2009 and June 2010, a staggering $400 million was raised for the state’s schools, all from the sale of North Carolina scratch cards and lottery tickets.
